What is 5-HTP for and why should I use it?

5-Htp is an essential amino acid that is critical for the formation of many life-giving bio-molecules, including structural proteins, enzymes, and the neurotransmitters, serotonin and melatonin.

5-Htp is also the least abundant amino acid in our diet.  Because of this, 5-Htp is widely used to correct mental and bodily disorders such as Depression, Obesity, Alcoholism, PMS, Anxiety, Panic, Fibromyalgia, Insomnia, Migraines, Aggressiveness, Weight Loss, Food Cravings, Etc., all of which can be caused by serotonin deficiency.

The truth about Serotonin, 5-Htp & your body:

Serotonin levels in the brain effect how we feel on a day to day basis.  When serotonin levels are low, irregular, or spiking, the body reacts to these changes causing disorders like the list above.  For years doctors have prescribed SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) to try to correct these problems.  For the most part the SSRI's were ineffective because of their lack to replace the mind's serotonin.  In the body, 5-Htp converts to serotonin.  When this essential amino acid is taken properly, serotonin levels will balance out and normalize helping to correct the vast number of disorders caused by the lack of this amino acid.

Depression results, in part, from the lack of serotonin, a brain neurotransmitter. The leading antidepressants are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. By blocking the reuptake of serotonin, they increase the serotonin available to stimulate serotonin receptors. These include Prozac¨, Zoloft¨, Paxil¨, and Effexor¨. While they may be very effective for the treatment of depression, they are not without side effects, including the loss of sex drive. I would think it pretty depressing if you lost your sex drive?
