CoEnzyme Q-10 and Idebenone

CoEnzyme Q-10

Coenzyme Q-10 was discovered by the chemist Fred L. Crane at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Enzyme Institute in 1957. From there CoQ-10's chemical structure was identified by Professor Carl Folkers who was working for Merck. Then Peter D. Mitchell was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1978 for discovering its vital role in mitochondrial energy production.

CoEnzyme Q-10 is vital for the production of the human bodies' energy. Ninety-five percent of this energy comes from Co-Q10 dependent adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is synthesized in the mitochondria. Therefore body parts with the highest energy requirements also have the highest concentration of coenzyme q-10 (lungs, heart, and liver).

Recent studies have shown that Coenzyme Q-10's antioxidant properties benefit both the body and the brain. It is well known that persons with Parkinson's Disease have a deficiency in CoQ-10 dependent enzymes. Some studies indicate that Coenzyme Q-10 has a neuroprotective effect directly related to its antioxidant properties, and has been found to prevent neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's Disease and Alzheimers, although it has not been proven to relieve the symptoms of Parkinsons. Some studies show an improvement in the mental functions of Alzheimers patients upon supplementation of CoQ-10.

Idebenone

During low oxygen conditions Co-Q10 is believed to switch from an anti-oxidizing agent into an auto-oxidizing agent, meticulously releasing free radicals into the body. But this is only known in low oxygen conditions. Idebenone, however, is believed to be an alternative. Idebenone is a synthetic chemical believed to perform the same functions as CoQ-10 without the auto-oxidation reaction risk. Therefore it is believed to be a safer alternative which has the added benefit of stimulating nerve growth factors in the brain
