GABA (Gamma-aminobutyric acid) GABA was discovered to be an inhibitory neurotransmitter in 1950. It is synthesized in the brain from the amino acid glutamate and the help of Vitamin B-6. GABA is the chief inhibitory neurotransmitter for a wide array of species, acting on twenty-five to forty percent of all brain synapses. Excitation of the brain can lead to grumpiness, restlessness, insomnia, and in extreme cases seizures. GABA, being an inhibitory neurotransmitter, calms the brain down inducing relaxation, pain relief, and sleep. Pharmaceutical barbiturates and benzodiazepines have all been shown to excite the GABA receptors, leading its users to a relaxed state of consciousness. Several neurological disorders, such as: epilepsy, sleep disorders, and Parkinson's disease, have all been partially attributed to a low number of GABA neurotransmitters in the brain.
