L-5HTP & L-Tryptophan

L-5HTP:

L-5HTP is a naturally occurring amino acid, precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin, and an Intermediate in tryptophan metabolism. It is generally marketed as a dietary supplement, often used as an anti-depressant, appetite suppressant &  sleep aid.

Aside from its researched ability to aid in depression, current research shows that 5-HTP can help children with night terrors. After six months of use 83.9% of the children reported a cease in persistent nightmares.

L-5HTP crosses the brain-blood barrier readily, which is advantageous when comparing it to 5-HT which can not. But beware, excessive doses of 5HTP, especially when used conjointly with Vitamin B-6 is alleged to be metabolized and excreted before reaching the brain.

Recommended doses are generally 50mg. to 100mg. of 5-HTP one to three times daily. Although dosages may vary according to the specific product used.

L-Tryptophan:

L-Tryptophan is an essential amino acid (it cannot be synthesized by an organism and must be part of that organisms diet). Amino acids are the building blocks in protein synthesis. L-Tryptophan functions as a biochemical precursor for Serotonin (a calming neurotransmitter in moderate levels).

Dr. Richard Wurtman researched the effectiveness of L-Tryptophan as a sleep aid and for other conditions resulting from low serotonin levels or low serotonin activity in the brain. L-Tryptophan's effectiveness in treating depression has been highly noted.

Other promising uses are:

Relief of chronic pain

Reduction of:

Impulsive

Violent

Manic

Addictive

Anxiety related

Obsessive compulsive behaviors or disorders
