L-Dopa, also known as levodopa, was discovered to cause a reduction of symptoms in animals with Parkinson's symptoms, according to a nobel prize winning 1950's study by scientist Arvid Carlsson. L-Dopa is synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine by the enzyme tyrosine hydroxylase. Once L-Dopa has been synthesized it behaves as the precursor molecule for the catecholamine neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine as well as the hormone epinephrine. L-Dopa works effectively because
it readily crosses the blood-brain barrier, increasing dopamine
levels, which has shown to effectively treat Parkinson's Disease
Symptoms. Since its creation in the 1960's levodopa has been
considered the "gold standard" for treating Parkinson's Disease.
