Recent Chinese tests have shown
that Huperzia serrata induces a
neuroprotective effect on the brain. The active constituent is
believed Huperzine A works by inhibiting the chemical acetylcholinesterase, a chemical that promotes the breakdown of acetylcholine. This inhibition of acetylcholinesterase increases the amount of acetylcholine available for the transfer and storage of information throughout the brain. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors like galantamine and donepezil (FDA approved drugs sold by the pharmaceutical companies), work similarly to Huperzine A, although it is suspected that Huperzine A may have less side effects and a lower toxicity. Clinical trials are currently under way. Do not take Huperzine A if you are taking any other drug that promotes the breakdown of acetylcholine, this may cause unwanted side effects, such as: vomiting, excess saliva, tear production and sweating.
