L-Theanine

L-Theanine is a non-protein amino acid which takes up 50% of the total free Amino Acids in the green tea plant. L-Theanine is famous for its ability to increase Alpha Waves (associated with a feeling of calm and mental alertness).

In a study by a Japanese Journal in 1998 researchers measured the brain waves of students with either high or low anxiety.

1st & 4th week: students were given plain water.

2nd & 5th week: students were given 50 mg. L-theanine mixed in water.

3rd & 6th week: students were given 200 mg. L-theanine.

All students experienced an increase in Alpha Waves and felt less stressed once L-theanine was administered. However, the increase was dose dependant. At 50 mg. only a slight increase was noticed. At 200 mg. the students felt much calmer and were producing more Alpha waves than the 50 mg. trial.
