Phosphatidylserine, also known as PS, is a phospholipid best known for comprising seven to ten percent of the cell membrane of neurons. It is essential for the normal functioning of neuronal cell membranes and has been used to slow cognitive decline in early onset Alzheimer's. Phosphatidylserine first became available in the United States around the mid nineties. It is a precursor to Acetylcholine, the brains messenger neurotransmitter. Originally found in the Bovine Cortex (BC) BC-Phosphatidylserine was used successfully to treat dementia and cognitive mental decline. But fear of bovine viruses caused phosphatidylserine manufacturers to switch from the bovine source to a soy based phosphatidylserine alternative. Strong evidence supports the notion that phosphatidylserine can help declining mental functions, because of this it is widely used in Scandinavia, Italy, and throughout Europe.
