Piracetam

Piracetam was first synthesized by UCB Laboratories in Belgium in 1964, led by Dr Corneliu E. Giurgea. It was so revolutionary a new category of chemicals had to be created. This category was called "nootropics", coming from a greek word meaning "acting on the mind". It has been observed that Piracetam acts upon the Corpus Callosom, a structure located in the center of the mammalian brain. It is a flat, wide bundle of axons beneath the cortex. The Corpus Callosom is responsible for inter-hemisphere communication. Flashes of creativity have been related to uninterupted communication between the different hemispheres of the brain.

Piracetam is chemically similar to the amino acid Pyroglutamate, and binds to cholinergic receptors in the brain.  This is why it has been suggested to supplement Choline alongside Piracetam, when taken together they have a synergistic effect that causes a greater improvement in memory and cognition than either used alone. Other Piracetam potentiators are DMAE, Centrophenoxine, and Hydergine.

Outside the U.S. Piracetam is used to treat alcoholism, vertigo, stroke, senile dementia, sickle cell anemia, dyslexia, and other health problems.
